CNN —Borussia Dortmund continued its “incredible” run in this season’s Champions League, reaching the final after stunning Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the semifinal second leg on Tuesday. Valerio Pennicino/UEFA/Getty ImagesDortmund’s run in the Champions League is at odds with its domestic form. In Europe, though, Die Schwarzgelben have found a way to win matches and the semifinal second leg was the perfect demonstration of just that. Kai Pfaffenbach/ReutersFor Dortmund, it is a full-circle moment, given its last Champions League final in 2013 was also held at Wembley Stadium. For longtime servant of the club Marco Reus, the Champions League final will also be his last opportunity to play for Dortmund.

CNN —Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels was left raging at what he called “a joke of a penalty” after the team’s 1-1 draw with PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. With Malik Tillman advancing into the box, Hummels slid in and clearly won the ball before following through on the attacker. However, referee Srđan Jovanović immediately pointed to the spot and Luuk de Jong stepped up and confidently buried the penalty kick. I cannot believe there can be decisions like today or against Chelsea or PSG with the VAR,” Hummels posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, after the match. They might as well give the referee that’s made the decision the opportunity to make the right decision anyway in his opinion.

The Champions League narrative is so often about Manchester City and Real Madrid. The past two champions of Europe were the only teams to sweep through the group stage with six wins. BONUS ENTRIESEvery result in the Champions League, plus the Europa League and Europa Conference League, also counts toward UEFA’s longstanding ranking table of each country’s collective performance. Each Champions League win for Inter, Napoli and Lazio is good for all Italian clubs doing well in Serie A. And so, the 29 games left in the Champions League through the June 1 final in London have great value beyond the 16 clubs directly involved.

Arsenal cruise to 2-0 win against Sevilla

LONDON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Arsenal returned to winning ways with a routine 2-0 defeat of Sevilla to take a big step towards qualification for the Champions League knockout rounds on Wednesday. Europa League champions Sevilla were desperately disappointing and managed only one shot on target, with the last kick of the game, as their last-16 hopes receded. Lens and PSV have five points while winless Sevilla are bottom with two points. Arsenal got their wish as the technology that caused Arteta's angst at Newcastle was redundant and Sevilla offered virtually nothing to cause alarm. "We knew we had to get three points and we did it," Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice said.

It was an English player's night in the Champions League, even as both of the English teams in action lost. It was the second Champions League game in a row where Bellingham played a vital role for Madrid after scoring the winning goal against Union Berlin. United has conceded seven goals in its opening two Champions League games after losing its opener 4-3 to Bayern Munich last month. The French team last won a Champions League game back in 2002 against AC Milan and hadn't qualified for Europe's top club competition again until this season. Real Sociedad had a smoother time as it picked up its first Champions League win for 20 years, beating Salzburg 2-0 on first-half goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Brais Méndez.

"He’s been progressing really well in the last two weeks, and he managed to train the last two or three days with the team. Arteta emphasised that Arsenal would not underestimate Lens, even though the Ligue 1 runners-up from last season have had a disappointing start, currently sitting in 15th place. Arsenal do not need extra motivation against Spurs, says Arteta

Sept 22 (Reuters) - Arsenal's Champions League group stage win this week was a confidence boost ahead of Sunday's game against rivals Tottenham Hotspur but the team does not need any extra motivation before a north London derby, manager Mikel Arteta said. Spurs are also on 13 points after four successive wins, with new coach Ange Postecoglou leading them to their best start to a top-flight season for 57 years. This game doesn't need any motivation, it's the most special game of the season," Arteta told reporters on Friday. Winger Gabriel Martinelli is still being assessed and has not been ruled out for Sunday's game, Arteta said. "He's loved by everybody, respected by everybody and he fully deserves what he's doing," Arteta said.

Late goals got Italian teams off to good starts in the last-ever group stage before the new Champions League format takes effect next year. The 20-year-old returned to PSG on Wednesday, signing a four-year contract following a year at Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven. In the Netherlands Simons was league's second-best scorer with 19 goals in 34 games, helping PSV to a second-place finish as well as to the 2022-23 KNVB Cup. "We have been able to sign an exceptional young talent in Xavi Simons," Leipzig's Board Member for Sport Max Eberl told the club website. The match was tetchy with referee Anthony Taylor dishing out 14 yellow cards, the most ever in a Europa League game, and playing almost 30 minutes of stoppage time in total. Their run to the final saw them beat PSV Eindhoven, Fenerbahce and Manchester United before downing Juventus in the semis. It was the third consecutive Europa League final that ended in a penalty shootout. The win means Sevilla will compete in next season's Champions League despite finishing outside the top four in the LaLiga. Mourinho had never lost a European final before Wednesday, having last year led Roma to the inaugural Europa Conference League title, becoming the first coach to win all the European trophies.

Steven Berghuis: Ajax midfielder sorry for lashing out at fan
  + stars: | 2023-05-29 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
Reuters —Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Steven Berghuis has apologized after he appeared to strike a fan following their 3-1 loss at FC Twente on Sunday that ended their dire season on a low note. In a video circulating on social media, Berghuis is seen lashing out at what appears to be a Twente supporter in front of the Ajax team bus before an official intervened. “I regret my actions, I should not have done this,” the 31-year-old Berghuis said in a statement. Ajax finished the current campaign in third place in the Eredivisie, outside the two Champions League qualification spots for the first time since 2009. Ajax qualified for the Europa League playoff round.
The Spaniards will bid for a record-extending seventh Europa League title when they face AS Roma in the final in Budapest on May 31, after Jose Mourinho’s side drew 0-0 at Bayer Leverkusen to secure a 1-0 aggregate victory in their semi-final. But midfielder Suso levelled six minutes later with a stunning long-range strike to take the game into extra time. It was a cathartic night at Seville as the Europa League kings worked their magic yet again in their favourite competition after a difficult season. "This is madness, incredible, it's time to enjoy this amazing moment," Sevilla captain Jesus Navas told Movistar Plus. "The courage of the fans has carried us and we are here again in another European final.
LONDON, May 2 (Reuters) - Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over a woeful Chelsea, set on their way by two goals from Martin Odegaard, but the title is still Manchester City's to lose having played two games less than the leaders. After losing to City 4-1 last week, Mikel Arteta made three changes, including giving striker Leandro Trossard a start in the place of Gabriel Martinelli and handing Jakub Kiwior his first league start in midfield. His side dominated their slumping London rivals straight from the kick-off as they sought to shake off last week's potentially title-deciding setback. "Everyone was so hurt after the game (against City)," Odegaard said after taking his league goal tally for the season to 14. Ajax in danger of missing out on Champions League football

However, after a 3-0 drubbing from PSV Eindhoven on Sunday, Ajax have dropped to third with four league matches left to play. It could get worse as their next league clash on May 6 is home to AZ, who lie two points behind them in fourth place. Now it is their arch rivals Feyenoord who are on course to win the league, needing five points from their final four matches. They have 73 points with PSV second on 65 and Ajax on 62, facing having to play in the Europa League next season after 13 successive season of competing in the Champions League.
Beer thrown from stands halts another Dutch league clash

AMSTERDAM, April 23 (Reuters) - Beer thrown from the crowd caused a 15-minute stoppage to the match before PSV Eindhoven secured a 3-0 home win over Ajax Amsterdam in the Dutch league on Sunday in another incident involving objects thrown from the crowd. A similar incident on Saturday caused the abandonment of the league match between second-from-bottom Groningen and NEC Nijmegen. But while Saturday’s game was called off after a plastic beaker of beer struck the linesman, Sunday’s match was only halted temporarily because the beer thrown did not land on anyone on the field. Dutch football has been grappling with abuse from the stands and the throwing of objects. They also decided that if an object is thrown from the terraces but misses, play will be temporarily stopped with the players sent to the dressing rooms.

Feb 9 (Reuters) - FC Cincinnati have signed Colombia defender Santiago Arias through the 2023 season, with an option to extend for an extra year, the MLS club said on Thursday. The 31-year-old, who recently played for Spanish second-tier side Granada on loan from Atletico Madrid, has joined Cincinnati on a free transfer, MLS said. "Santi brings an enormous amount of experience and ability to FC Cincinnati," Cincinnati General Manager Chris Albright said. Arias joined Atletico in 2018 after five years at PSV Eindhoven, where he won three league titles and two Dutch Super Cups. Arias has more than 50 caps and was part of the Colombia squad that finished third at the Copa America Centenario and also went to the 2014 and 2018 World Cup tournaments.
Jan 26 (Reuters) - U.S. Soccer sporting director Earnie Stewart and men's team general manager Brian McBride have decided to vacate their positions amid an ongoing shakeup at the organization, the federation said on Thursday. The federation said it was seeking a new sporting director, who will be charged with hiring the men's team's next head coach after Gregg Berhalter's contract expired at the end of last year. Anthony Hudson will serve as the men's coach until a permanent head coach is named, and U.S. Soccer said it has hired Sportsology Group to lead the search for the next sporting director. It has been embroiled in turmoil since returning from Qatar amid a bitter dispute between Berhalter, U.S. midfielder Gio Reyna and his parents. He has said he hopes to be rehired as the team's head coach and U.S. Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone has said he is a candidate.
March double helps Brighton to 3-0 win over sorry Liverpool

BRIGHTON, England, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Brighton & Hove Albion winger Solly March netted twice early in the second half and set up another goal in a 3-0 home win over a sluggish Liverpool on Saturday that lifts them above the Reds to seventh in the Premier League standings. The victory was Brighton's first over Liverpool in the top flight and they deserved to take all three points once March helped them convert their dominance in possession into goals. Undeterred, March gave his side the lead in the 47th minute as teenaged striker Evan Ferguson pressured the Liverpool defence into a mistake and Brighton won the ball high up the pitch. The win means Brighton have 30 points from 18 games, two ahead of Liverpool who have struggled with form and injuries, with Reds boss Juergen Klopp blaming a lack of organisation for the result. AL RAYYAN, Qatar—Almost a decade ago, an American teenager who was starting to attract attention from the top teams in Europe made a pit stop in the Netherlands. Christian Pulisic’s time at PSV Eindhoven was brief, but he was there long enough to play in a youth tournament against the academies from other elite clubs. And one of his teammates would eventually become an even more dangerous attacking talent than he was. His name was Cody Gakpo. And Gakpo is now the player capable of sending Pulisic and the Americans home from the World Cup.
